We’re Watching: Furni

April 23rd, 2009

We’re watching Montreal based design duo Furni.

Devin Barrette and Mike Giles, the names behind design company “Furni”, are nothing short of design super heroes. Instead of wearing spandex outfits while keeping Montreal’s streets safe at night, they’re rescuing us from boring disposable big box garbage. Starting as a custom furniture firm, they’re now exploring their own creativity, designing new familiar products with an unconventional twist.

templeton

Brigade, $78. Porcelain cups with walnut veneered carrying tray.

emily

Emily, $148. “Show us your skills” competition winner. Brushed aluminum casing, 5/8” walnut wood & old-school red LED clock w/alarm functions.

It would’ve been really easy for Furni to manufacture all of their products overseas like everyone else, but they have a very different approach. “We’re still very hands on, from picking the rough lumber all the way to staining, finishing, boxing and shipping the final product. We are just a two man operation, but proud of the flexibility and control it gives us over the end product. If you guys keep on buying we will keep on creating!”

Now didn’t I say they were Super Heroes?
